I think it’s funny that I’m the self defense instructor at CrossFit Marin, but I rarely post anything about self defense. That’s going to change!
For starters, I found a fairly decent clip of some Hawaiian jujitsu techniques. I like this video because it has a good variety of movements, some with a gi and some without, some useful for sport and some obviously more suited to survival situations.
One of the best things about judo and jujitsu is that they are flexible methods of self defense. Other arts such as Krav Maga or kickboxing are quite effective and disabling an attacker, but judo and jujitsu give you a flexibility that allows you to tailor the force of your response to the threat presented to you; you might not always want to break somebody’s leg. They also don’t require a significant amount of body-weapon conditioning, like karate or tae kwon do, and so can be taught relatively quickly.
Come to the Wednesday self defense class at 6:00 PM and see for yourself.
